Prompt

The sun was beginning to soften over the small yard behind their house when Baba called out, “Ngatimboenda kunotamba panze!” Mai came out laughing, carrying a small ball, while their daughter, Tariro, ran ahead of them barefoot in the grass. The air was warm, and the sky glowed gold. “Bata, Baba!” Tariro shouted, throwing the ball with all her tiny strength. It barely reached halfway, but Baba gasped dramatically and dove forward as if it were the fastest ball in the world. “Ahh! Wakunda Baba!” he laughed, rolling onto the grass. Mai clapped her hands, her eyes shining. “Muri kuita zvekutamba chaizvo!” she teased. Soon they were all chasing each other. Baba pretended to be a giant, stomping slowly while Tariro squealed and hid behind Mai. But Mai betrayed her with a tickle, and Tariro’s laughter filled the yard like music. After a while, they lay on a blanket together, watching clouds drift across the sky. Tariro pointed upward. “Ona, Mai! Iyo yakaita sembwa!” Baba squinted. “Kwete, yakaita seshumba!” Mai smiled. “Chero zvazviri, zvakanaka nekuti tiri tese.” Tariro rested her head on Mai’s arm and reached for Baba’s hand. In that simple evening light—full of laughter, grass stains, and love—the world felt complete.
